On November 30, USAGM and Voice of America affiliates together with the CFC Big Ideas started a three-day workshop on Ethical use of AI in Journalism in Accra, Ghana.
The Ethical Use of AI in Journalism workshop for the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation was a three-day training focused on familiarizing journalists with different AI tools to understand the benefits and limitations of AI and consider the ethical implications of AI-generated content. Key topics covered included an introduction to AI and ML, practical sessions on AI for text and image generation, ethical considerations, mistakes AI makes, AI hallucinations, and AI automation.
The workshop was packed with conversations about when it’s appropriate to use AI tools, why AI needs fact-checking, and the real-world implications of AI use in newsrooms.
The CFC Big Ideas team projected the training budget and managed project finances, drafted reports, communicated with trainers and local coordinators, arranged training logistics, organized travel for international speakers, and secured venue, catering, and accommodation for out-of-town trainees.
In December, the same workshop is going to take place in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea.
